On April 10, 2001, you, the citizens of Coral Gables elected me as your Commissioner. I came into office following a true grassroots campaign, fueled by the hard work, dedication, and inspiration of the friends, family, and citizens who believed in a more open government, with a representative who would listen to what they had to say on the things that mattered to them. The time, talent, and the majority of financial contributions came from ordinary citizens, not large corporations or special interest.
Since my election, I have discovered that I love what I do and feel passionately about the work that needs to be carried out. It is truly the hardest, most time-consuming work I have ever carried out. Yet, even after the tough days, and in government there are many, I still feel that the work I do makes a difference in the day-to-day quality of life of my community.
I listened very carefully to what you told me when I walked your neighborhoods. You wanted your streets repaved more frequently and you wanted the focus to come back to the issues of the neighborhoods. Seniors spoke about the lack of places for them to socialize and living facilities that would allow them to stay in the community they have lived in and loved. Most disturbing was that many shared that they did not trust government to be responsible with their hard-earned tax dollars. And you spoke loud and clear.
Many things are already underway, some will take a little longer and require significant financial resources. To rebuild trust will also take time, and I have made it my goal to change that distrust and cynicism, by demanding accountability from the city management and from myself, everyday and with every decision.
Meanwhile, I continue to listen and to stay alert to what you have to say. Thank you again for the honor and opportunity to serve you.
