A Message from Chief M. L. Hammerschmidt

For the third straight year, crime in Coral Gables has continued to decline. However, 2005 was particularly notable in that overall crime decreased by 11.11% and violent crime decreased by 5%. All of which translates to a safer and more secure community in which we all can live, work and play. Although the men and women of the Coral Gables Police Department take great pride in the continued decline of the City’s crime rate, we cannot take sole responsibility for these successes. We would be remiss in not recognizing the contributions of the residents, as well as the business community, for their continued involvement in various community programs that greatly assist the Department in its mission to make Coral Gables the safest city in the nation.

In addition to its traditional crime fighting duties, the Department has also been reshaping itself into a more professional organization. In particular, the Internal Affairs and discipline processes have been streamlined; numerous Standard Operating Procedures and manuals have been updated; and additional specialized training provided to officers and supervisors. Along with this, the Department continues to upgrade its equipment and technology. In particular, the administration has ordered and awaits delivery of a Sky Watch observation platform that acts as a force multiplier, enabling the Department to more efficiently manage crowds at large scale events.

As we move further into the 21st Century, the Coral Gables Police Department will continually look for better and more efficient ways of delivering the high quality services expected by the community. To this end, we remain committed to the citizens and business community we serve.

Sincerely, Chief Michael L. Hammerschmidt.
