The Coral Gables Police Explorer Program enables young adults between the ages of 14 and 21 to learn about a career in law enforcement. Though the program usually runs on a school calendar (September - May), it is possible to join at any time. Along with offering students a first-hand look at police work, many of the explorer activities also count toward community service requirements.

Police Explorer Activities

Coral Gables Police Explorers must attend Explorer Academy in order to successfully complete the program. Academies are sponsored periodically throughout the year by the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County. In addition, Police Explorers volunteer their time to serve the community, working side-by-side with Police officers in a variety of activities, including :

· Crime Prevention Projects
· Ride-along program with Police Officers
· Event crowd control
· Searches for missing persons
· Firearms training and qualification
· Competitions with other Explorer Posts
· Community Events
· Sporting events
· Parades

Minimum Qualifications

To participate, candidates must meet the following qualifications :

· Be between the ages of 14 and 21
· Obtain parental approval (with liability release)
· Maintain a 2.0 "C" grade point average or higher
· Have no criminal police record
· Be in good physical shape and health
· Successfully complete the application process (this includes a written application, oral interview and background check)
· Have a general interest in Law Enforcement
· Have good moral character
· Be available to attend meetings and events

Meetings

Explorers meet once a week for a two-hour session. Meetings are generally held at the Coral Gables Police Department at 2801 Salzedo St., or at the Coral Gables Youth Center, at 405 University Dr.
